It’s perfect cross country weather today, which

It’s perfect cross country weather today, which is a lovely coincidence since it was also the groundbreaking for the Spokane Valley Cross Country Course!

“Running changed my life.” Most runners would probably share Coach Pat Tyson’s sentiments from today’s groundbreaking, with their own stories of the impact running and being part of a running community has had on them. We know this project means a lot to Spokane’s running community, and we’re honored to be part of bringing this place—where athletes of all ages will make memories, set records, and run their hearts out—to life.

Getting to celebrate today among the elected officials and team members making it possible, as well as coaches and athletes who are excited to run on it, was special. And everyone had a good laugh when the train rolled by!

This course will be a first for our region, and the enthusiasm around it is wonderful to see. There are many milestones to come! (The last video is the irrigation mainline arriving ☺️)

More site visits today! Over at the Spokane Valley Cross Country Course site, Copenhaver Construction is making quick work at the starting chute! With their 154,000 lb, 630 horsepower D10 Caterpillar (yes, we nerded out over that here in the office!), topsoil stripping is underway.

It’s #WorldMentalHealthDay—a great day to check in with yourself and your loved ones.

As landscape architects, we know how much our surroundings can impact mental health—it’s part of why we do what we do. Access to green space and time spent in nature can positively affect mental health, whether you’re exercising outdoors or just spending time enjoying the view from a nice park bench. It won’t surprise you to learn that Team SPVV spends a lot of time outside—for work, for play, and yes, for mental health! Running on nearby trails, walking the neighborhoods with our dogs, tending to our gardens, and spending time alone or with friends under a nice shady tree are just a few ways we care for our mental health outdoors.

It’s a beautiful day in Spokane today—if you can, take some time to be kind to yourself and get outside. If you can’t, still take some time to be kind to yourself—talk to a friend, take a break, ask for help. If you or someone you know needs support, @namispokane is an excellent local organization for mental health resources.

Meet the newest members of the SPVV team: landscap

Meet the newest members of the SPVV team: landscape designers Nestor Herrera and Nick Chapman!

Nestor has always known he wanted to do something that helped communities. When he first learned about landscape architecture, he knew that was how he wanted to do it: by creating spaces that connect people with nature. He's most excited to work on projects that benefit the community and the surrounding environment—and is already bringing that enthusiasm to the new cross-country course in Spokane Valley and the parks master plan in Reardan.

Nick has been interested in landscapes since childhood—collecting plants and experimenting with landscape design in his parents' backyard. After beginning his career in landscape construction and management, Nick took the plunge into landscape architecture. Always keen to learn, Nick enjoys the constant discoveries of the design process as he works on a wide array of projects at SPVV.

Both are recent WSU grads (go Cougs!), and bring strong 3D rendering skills and the insights gained from experience in landscape construction to every project. We're thrilled to have them on our team. 🍂

Our partners at Walker Construction have started work on site clearing, and the sod up at Ray Turf Farms is looking lush (swipe theough to see it—scheduled for installation next summer!). Couldn’t ask for a better way to start autumn. ☀️🍂🏃🏻‍♀️
