Chronicle Courtyard

This plaza is located on the south side of the Spokesman-Review building, nestled between Tamarack Public House and Nodland Cellars Tasting Room. One of the reasons for updating the existing plaza was to allow for large group gatherings and infrastructure for live music and seasonal lighting. The existing sculpture was relocated from the back corner of the plaza to the forefront and is now part of a water feature that doubles as seating for users and passersby. Existing tree grates were reused for the new trees. A new fire pit was installed along with plentiful seating, especially surrounding the entries into the adjacent businesses. MMEC designed a pergola which is the center of the design, and an archway sign reading “Chronicle Courtyard.” Planting beds and sweeps of colored concrete help define the spaces within the courtyard.
