SPVV is serving as landscape architectural consultant for the field at Avista Stadium, home of Spokane Indians Baseball Club, as the team and the County make improvements to the stadium to meet new MLB standards. SPVV worked with the Indians and a lead architectural consultant in 2021 to review the field, prepare recommendations for complete reconstruction, and prepare costs for the anticipated renewal of the field. In August 2021, SPVV prepared a construction document bid package for nearly immediate bidding and construction, with a scheduled completion no later than early November 2021, in advance of the 2022 season kicking off in April. The project, an interim renovation, improved early and late season playability by enhancing field drainage, replacing the existing sod, and repairing/adjusting existing 1980s-era irrigation zones in the field, as well as addressing serious cross-contamination issues between irrigation and potable water demands.
SPVV immediately prepared a scope of services for the work, authorized completion of a survey using both drone and ground-based control, and began initial design. Within ten days, SPVV completed the bid package and worked with Spokane County Purchasing to issue the documents for a first-phase project that would provide basic infrastructure for the larger-scale reconstruction. The bids were higher than the budgeted amounts, and SPVV reviewed potential options with the apparent low bidder and, within two business days, created a value-engineered design that brought both the field renewal project and the cross-contamination bid items within the construction budget. Further economization was possible with SPVV’s on-site observations and meetings with the contractor, resulting in further savings for both the County and the Baseball Club. The work was completed in mid-November 2021 and was ready for play on schedule for the 2022 season. SPVV continued working with the team and ALSC for the long-term, extensive field reconstruction and major stadium improvements, which will begin construction after the 2024 season.
