Yesterday, we said that our favorite thing about landscape architecture is how much it can utterly transform a space. Tied for favorite, or an extremely close second? How landscape architecture brings communities together. It’s Opening Day for the Spokane Indians, so of course, we’re thinking about how many people are impacted by having a place to come and root for the home team! Like most of our Spokane neighbors, we have so many fond memories of baseball games, pictures with Otto, and even working first jobs at the stadium (shoutout to food preps!).

Watching games at Avista Stadium is a beloved SPVV tradition, and being part of designing the park is a tremendous gift. From the Pepsi Porch to the recent field renovations, we’re so thankful to be involved in ensuring this community treasure remains the iconic, fun-filled ballpark we’ve grown up with. Let’s make some more memories! ⚾

There are a lot of things to love about landscape

There are a lot of things to love about landscape architecture, but our favorite—and what set Tom on the path to becoming a landscape architect—is how it can completely transform a space and give people a lasting, beautiful place to play, relax, connect, and delight. How can you not love a profession that takes an old railyard and turns it into a spectacular park?

Tom, Anne, and Ken went from enjoying Expo ’74 as kids to enjoying Riverfront Park with their own families and, eventually, to being part of the Park’s recent redevelopment. If you had told any of them in 1974 that someday they would be designing West Havermale Island or the Skate Ribbon, right there at the same place as the World’s Fair, they probably wouldn’t have believed you. And then they probably would have gone right back to the A&W Sky Ride.

SPVV is turning 30 this year, so we're taking some

SPVV is turning 30 this year, so we're taking some time to look back on the projects, lessons, and memories from the last three decades. Even before founding SPVV, Tom worked on projects for Gonzaga University—and when we first opened our doors, Gonzaga was our first official client.

Over the years, we've worked with Gonzaga on over 80 projects, from residence halls and athletic facilities to academic buildings and those special, sacred spaces of deep meaning and reflection that make Gonzaga unique. It has been—and continues to be—an honor for all of us to serve Gonzaga University in the growth of a world-class university.
